Potential Research Project Proposal

Nowadays, environmental problem has become a global issue; saving natural resource by recycling is promoted as the responsibility of every citizen. Therefore, the recycling bins are “invited “into NUS. There are two kinds of recycling bins—yellow bins are for cans recycling and green bins are for paper. We believe that if everyone would recycle his (her) daily recyclable garbage, day after day, we will save a lot of natural resource. However, things do not go as well as they are expected. Some students throw everything into garbage bins, as if they can’t see the recycling bins; some don’t bother to separate cans from paper, but throw them into the recycling bin whichever is near to them; some even throw food or tissue paper into recycling bins which gives the cleaners a big trouble. Based on this problem, we would like to conduct a research to find out the usage level of recycling bins among NUS students.

An attitudinal survey is necessary in this case because we want to know the percentage of students who use recycling bins; for those who don’t, what are the reasons? Is that because they don’t they believe in recycling, or they don’t bother to separate recyclable from unrecyclable garbage but simply throw everything in garbage bins. On top of that, we want to find out how many students use recycling bins correctly. We will ask a couple of questions to test their knowledge level of recyclable items, for example, are food and tissue paper recyclable? The analyzed data will be reflected to Office of Student’s Affair (OSA) for further implementation.

I think this topic is feasible as I also found that the usage of recycle bins is quite poor. There must be some reason that contribute to this problem. For example, some people might know the importance of recycling but there may be some reasons that make them do not prefer to use the recycle bins. On the other hand, there might not be the problem of the recycle bins but the people who do not aware of the importance of recycling. By conducting this survey, we can know the reasons of the poor usage of recycle bins and to find out ways to improve this situation.

It is really sad to know that some NUS students treat the recycling bins as a rubbish bin. Although I believe that we are old enough to know the difference between them, I think it would be still be good to carry out a survey to find out how many students use recycling bins correctly. To those students who are not sure of the different types of recycling bins available, this may be a good chance for them to learn about it so that they do not make the same mistakes the next time.

Recycling is one of the important exercises to save the earth and its natural resources. The recycled bins that I have noticed in NUS are at canteen and the forum, beside the lift (I m not sure about other faculties). I see that students didn’t use the recycled bins appropriately as you mentioned. The reasons can be due to not having enough bins on campus. Some students might notice the value of recycling bins. But the bins may not be handy enough. Some students just do not practice the recycling habits. In order to raise the awareness level of recycling exercises, a survey should be conducted on students to find out the feasible ways.

Good choice of research topic and clear description of the problem but you need to frame your topic in the form of a research question. If possible, include your hypothesis here as well.

Indeed, the enviornment problem is a big issue today. We can even see the title "NUS fights climate change" on the shuttle bus. I believe the students' understanding on recycling will be enhanced if they do the survey. I think the hypothesis is to inform the university board of the functionality of the existing recycling bins and to let students' know the importance of recyling.

Yeah, as Zheng Ning mentioned before, currently, environmental issue has been the main concern as it will affect the next generation. This research is rather feasible as many people are aware of it but they did not practice the responsibility of conservation of the green Earth. Hopefully, with this survey will create more awareness among the people of the importance of recyling and conservation&preservation of the Earth.
